The Art gallery “Branislav Dešković”

Unutarnji svijet moderne umjetnosti na Braču

In the very heart of Bol, on the waterfront by the harbor, stands the Branislav Dešković Gallery of Fine Arts – the most important art institution on the island of Brač. The gallery was opened in 1963 in a 17th-century Renaissance-Baroque palace and is named after Branislav Dešković, a sculptor from Pučišća known for his realistic animal sculptures, especially dogs.

The gallery’s collection includes more than 400 works of modern and contemporary art, making it the most valuable collection of Croatian painting and sculpture of the 20th century on the Adriatic islands. On the ground floor are sculptures by great Croatian sculptors – from Ivan Rendić and Ivan Meštrović to Antun Augustinčić and Dešković himself – while the upper floors house a rich collection of paintings by renowned modernists such as Ignjat Job, Emanuel Vidović, Ljubo Ivančić, Juraj Plančić, Edo Murtić, and many others.

A special value of the collection lies in its connection with the Mediterranean. The light, colors, and motifs of Dalmatia are present in many works, giving the gallery a unique identity and a strong link to the region in which it is located.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, the gallery also hosts temporary exhibitions of contemporary artists during the summer, making Bol a vibrant center of cultural events on Brač every year.

For visitors, a walk through the gallery is more than just viewing works of art – it is an encounter with the history and spirit of Croatian art, as well as an opportunity to experience the powerful synergy of tradition and modernity within Bol’s stone architecture.
